How about 18 for the price of 12? I know the place.

To expect every retailer to have a set price and profit is called communism. We live in a free country so we are free to choose how and where we buy widgets.

I haven't seen a post yet that said they want set prices for a pound of minnows. What I see is people want a more accurate way of getting what they pay for. If I had been going to a shop and buying minnows there for a long time and then all of a sudden I started getting noticeably less that what I had been getting before I would be upset. Doesn't matter if I was paying for a dozen or paying for a pound. You go to a resturant and order a steak by the ounce right? Lets say you go there and you order a steak over time you have been taught that at this establishment you get a nice sized steak now the next time you go your steak seems a little skimpy....well according to your thought you should be ok with that because you only paid for 1 steak and that's what you got.

Drakewoodie, you gave me pause to rethink my communism part and you are correct that is not communism. You also verified with the steak analogy what a couple of us have said, if you are getting what you paid for then there is no foul, also if I say 2 bucks for 12 and all you got was 12 where is that wrong? What other system is more accurate than that? Free markets will dictate what cost is. Springhill, I read the post you reference and found it interesting too. It sounds like the norm there is by the pound, why is that? A little more research on their DNR site shows no references to ANS programs regarding bait or anything else for that matter, I wonder if that may have some influence on pricing along with the fact that it looks like all their bait is raised or sold by vendors in state, is that the case in Kansas? I also noticed their tourism department is seperate from the DNR lower overhead possibly? 188 thousand registered boat vs. 90 thousand in Kansas, Mississippi has no property tax on boats, sheer volume? All this could trickle down to the retailers? 8 bucks for a freshwater lic? Some huge differences in Laws regarding bait from the states that sell by the pound, most at best would be considered wide open when compared to the law here thereby lowering overhead and labor for the vendors. You guys have control of the market system based on where you purchase. You can easily dictate where you spend your money and the businesses will change their model or fail. There are many caveats to that line of thinking. My original comments were based on the fact that it appeared you guys were trying to tell free marketers what they should do, if you purchase where you get the "deal" then it should work out for you and only those places who conform to your standards will survive or we might find out that they don't really need that business model. I suspect the latter as a few minner dunkers who buy by the pound will not outweigh the thousands who buy who buy by the dozen because they don't spend the time on the water that we do and certainly will not make the investment to keep such volume. My dog in this fight is to support small businesses as long as I can afford it, I havn't bought minnows for 15 years since I left that business, not because of cost but I don't use them anymore but I still spend money in the small businesses if they carry the products I use and are reasonably priced. It is hard enough to keep them open nowadays.

Somebody put this thread out of it's misery! LOL Probably out of line here (wouldn't be the first time) but in the grand scheme of the cost of going fishing.....rods, reels, boat, trolling motor, batteries, sonars, trucks, trailers, tags, taxes, insurance, park permits, licenses, tackle boxes, fuel, beer (for some) etc..... are you really that concerned over the cost of a few minnow??
