Spent the weekend at Melvern for one last camping trip before I had to winterize the camper. I have been reading about all this "slinging plastic" so I thought I would give it a try this weekend. Spent 5 hours Sat morning slinging plastic anywhere from 2 ft to 30 ft, rocks, points, flats, coves, you name it, and caught a big fat ZERO!! Finally got my senses back and started fishing minnows over the piles. Caught somewhere north of 75 crappie and kept 22, nothing less than 11 inches, biggest was 14 inches or a shade over. We decided to give trolling a shot on the way back in and caught 8 really nice white bass.
One of these days I will learn,,,, minnows are the only way to go!![]()

Nice catch thanks for the report, wish this wind would die down
We did our second fall trip to Melvern starting Monday thru noon today and got blown off the lake. We managed a few Monday morning then decided to go to Pomona for the afternoon. Having never been there we just looked for calm water and caught a decent mess at the SE corner of the dam, all on jigs, color didn't seem to matter. Started there Tuesday morning and almost nothing. One boat kept crappie fishing and my boat decided to have some fun and go cast lipless crankbaits for whites. Ended up cleaning 83 on Tuesday fishing windy points. Went back for a couple hours this morning and three of us caught 53 with four wipers over 18 inches, the biggest was 24 inches and weighed 6.5 pounds. It was a blast. Whites don't eat as good as crappie but we will take what the lake gives us.
I certainly HOPE you realize that Melvern has Zebra mussels in it so you must wash your boat and trailer in at least 140 degree water or a solution of 10% bleach or let the boat and trailer dry for no less than 5 days before entering another body of water!! There are large signs posted at every boat ramp on Melvern indicating the lake is infested with zebra mussels and it is illegal to transport them (knowingly or not).
It only takes one careless person to spread these ANS and once they are introduced to a body of water it is impossible to remove them.
Ignorance of the law is no excuse in my opinion.

Wow!! Good point slinger.
Slinger, I spent 5 hours myself slingin' with no luck Sat. However, the first 1.5hrs of twilight were pretty good. It just went flat as the sun went up.
