Thread: Need some help

I am in need of some help from my friends here on Crappie.com. I just recently moved to the Salina, Kansas area. I tried fishing some of the local lakes this last summer with little to no luck. I recently purchased a larger boat to accommodate some of the larger lakes in this area. The reason I am needing some help is because this will be my first spring in this area. I am hoping to go fishing this Wednesday (my only day off this week). Can anyone recommend a lake within an hour of Salina to try? My friend and I are wanting to catch crappie, but would also fish for walleye or largemouth bass. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome Aboard Crappietaker. I can't agree more with the last two statements. Glen Elder definetely for Crappie and Walleye. If you are looking for a little bit smaller water, Ottawa state fishing lake up by Bennington has always been a good little crappie lake as well as bass. Bennington also has Saugeye, which are the walleyes cousin. Those would be my first two picks for the fish you mentioned. Three other lakes that I would highly recommened would be Milford/Marion/Kanopolis. Those three are both within easy driving distance of Salina and are usually great producers. Chatt, I figured they had you working the Grand Opening at Cabelas this week! Guess that's Shane's territory, I see he's going to be there. When are you hitting the Glen?

I would have to agree on the Ottawa State fishing lake idea... it's only a 20 minute drive from Salina and It can be really good fishing at times.

The lakes just started the transition from deep water bite to the pre-spawn. Good luck if you get out, I have a feeling the bite anywhere this week is going take some searching. You might actually have better luck at the smaller lakes this week with them warming faster, a lot of the crappie at Glen have left the deep river channel and will be on the move this week. By friday and over the weekend I think the fish will be much closer to the bank. (not spawning just up chasing shad) Good luck if you get out.
