Talking Smoke'n Hot Bite Was On

Managed to beg off work early again and was on the lake by 3pm....

The lake started out with a slight chop but as the day got longer it was almost dead calm. The coves have cooled down some with several I fished being 63F. I tried and tried to get into the crappie....then started smallmouth fishing and the bite was red hot. We caught like 15 or so smallies with most being 1.5 lb to 2.5lb. Caught several small LM and spots also in addition to the smallies. They were absolutely tearing up a 1/8 oz Green road runner with a 3" shad/fire tail grub on it. I never switched the lure all evening, just kept straightening the hook and replacing the grub. I did file the hook twice after loosing a couple and of course a BIG one. Most were caught in rocky areas in 2 fow with drop offs near by. All out of the same area. Even caught 3 large perch on the road runner also.

I've never eaten smallmouth, I've caught some and they are good fighters but never kept any. Anyone know if they are any good to eat?

I did not eat them. We released them at the ramp. Smallmouth to me is very tasty but I like fish except for cats caught out of Milford....don't like them. I released them all only because of they were prime breeding stock. Later this fall I will keep several. Of all the fresh water bass family I like smallies the best. I have some thawing in the sink from last fall we are going to fry up later today with bacon seasoned brown beans and honey corn bread. ......Now I made myself very hungry.
