I have a good bit of squirrels that are natural as well as died and it looks pretty good, but I mostly use feather for my self. So probably one of the hair jig users should be able to help you more. I do know you can die them though, but they always have dark areas too.

    Dr. Fish uses squirrel hair.

He submitted one of the finest looking jigs I have ever seen come across this forum back in the Shellcracker Jig Swap. It was squirrel tail tied onto a darter head and the whole thing was jet black. Both the texture of the hair and paint job on the head were smooth as silk. Although I loved the looks of the jig and I know beyond the shadow of a doubt that it would work, I have never put it in the water cause I didn't want to mess it up or lose it, Ha!

You may ask him about his dying methods as well as some tips on how to use.

Well, mepps has used squirrel tail on spinners for a lot of years. I use it a lot also, both natural and dyed. It looks good, has good body,
holds up well in water, and has good action.

    Thumbs up Made & Sold

I tied and sold a lot of them for "Brim" fishin back in the 60's ... worked best with a float. All were in natural color .. (Different color heads) ... I have caught a pile of gills on them.

I tie up a few for myself, but frankly don't sell that many squirrels. Most buyers want kip if they are using hair or hackle or marabou if they want feathers.

There are a few threads on here on dying kip tails. Type that in the search box and see what pops up. Might help you with your squirrels.
