    Well the insert idea is out the window then, sorry. Something else to look for is a bent hinge pin.
    I love taking my kids fishing, now if I could just manage to fish at the same time.

    i like to take a nice flat file to all the old molds i get just to smooth it out.

    I have a bunch of the old Palmer molds and yes they can be a pain. You have the one photo where it shows the pour holes and looking at the photo it looks like the two halves are out of line. As the others have said it could very well be the hinge pin. If you can carefully get it out straightening it and re-inserting it might solve your problem.

    there is only one other thing to try and I've only done it once. If you have a table vise, take two blocks of very hard wood and put the mold between it and clamp it in the vise and crank down on it. If it's warped it may help flatten it out. The other thing you can try is carefully buff the insides of the mold, Palmers are notorious for having little specks of lead stuck to the insides that you can't see and they will keep the mold from closing completely. I wouldn't use a wire brush on it.
