    Default Begginner

Hello everyone I'm kinda new to the site and very new to tying jigs and I have a few questions that you've probably heard time and time again. I have a vise and all and I know I need to purchase various colors of fly tying thread. I want to know of some begginner friendly tying materials if there is such a thing. I know marabou is real popular, but what are some other goods materials? I need some help guys thanks.

Strung Hackle, chenille size 1 or 2, jig heads from 1/80-1/8 in #8-2, good quality thread like UTC 140, silk or other type floss, Krystal flash, hackle pliers, head cement and last but not least any kind of feather you can get your hands on from ducks, geese, pheasants, turkey and other birds as well as squirrel, calf (kip), rabbit and other tails and fur patches.

That will give you enough to tie for a long time and tie a ton of different patterns.
I love taking my kids fishing, now if I could just manage to fish at the same time.

I'd suggest not fooling around with a lot of different materials at first. Practice tying a basic marabou-and-chenille jig until it's second nature. Marabou and chenille is really all you need to catch crappie. Once you've mastered that basic jig, try some other materials.

I would have to agree with DB4D if you are starting out for there is enough different colors in the chenille to keep you busy for awhile with some mighty fancy looking jigs that will catch fish too. It will also help keep your costs right off the start and you can slowly add new materials when you are ready.

    Ditto DB4D
Learn to tie the woolybugger - it's a great entry level jig/fly.
Vist you local fly shop (if you have one) and see if they offer a fly tying class. Always easier to learn with hands on experience.
