Do any of you guys cast and retrieve the jigs that you tie? It seems like there would not be much action from the jig doing this.

78mudbug,
you talking about putting a float at a certain depth and fishing straight down off the boat?
drift? troll? anchor?
just curious
trying to learn all i can

i do on mine but the jigs are different.... if the hook eye bends up at 90 degress.. that's my jigging jig.... of the hook eye bends at 45 or 60... that's my trolling jig and those I'll cast and retrieve.... but honestly... that's a very limited jig for me to do something with... if i'm casting & retrieving... i'm using a really small crankbait or really small rat-l-trap or really small spinnerbait....
dino i usually put the float at a certain depth and cast it to where i think the crappie are and let it sit for a few seconds then reel it a foot or so and stop again all the way to the boat.i cast and retrieve more than anything though
The only way I fish is cast and retrieve, weather it's a tied jig or plastic. On the retrieve my pole is always dancing. That imparts the swimming motion that's so deadly. Try it close to the boat is clear water to see what rod action does to the jig, especially a marabou jig. Another trick if your using a spinning rear is to drop your index finger on your right hand while cranking with your left. Let the line hit you finger each time the bail brings it near your hand. This will momentarily speed up the jig and when the line releases from you finger the jig will stop and fall. This will impart a deadly action on your jig.

It's about all I do is cast and retrieve either with a jig and float or a straight jig.Big problem this year is keeping green carp away from my baits and give those slabs a chance.
