Hackle question

I am new to tying and have been tying marabou tail, chenille body crappie jigs in 1/16 and 1/32 oz. I know nothing about hackle but want to do some. What to order as far as the hackle (be specific) as to type and maybe where? Is the hackle used exclusively or in combination with other materials on most of the crappie jigs? Someone get me started with this info and maybe direct me to some good pictures on some of the guys sites that sell jigs as good examples of jigs using hackle. Thanks

Grizzly natural saddle hackle or grizzly natural strung saddle hackle. Best way to start I think. Good size variety on the hackle and a good all around color.

It can be used alone or with just about anything. Hackle tips can used for tails. the hackle feather toward the thicker part of the quill can but used for tails on small jigs or wings in any jig. Lots of different things you can do with it. I personally think the only 2 things more useful in tying are chenille and marabou. But nothing is more versatile. IMO.



Believe it or not, both of those are tied with nothing but Hackle.



These are also tied with hackle. Both the head and tail are out of hackle. The one on the left is simply wrapped around. The one on the right is wrapped and then pulled together and tied in between the bar bell eyes both above and below. The body material is chenille in 2 colors.

If you want a lot of examples of hackle tied on flies search for skunk butt flies. All of them can be tied on jigs rather easily.

There are different types of hackle – usually dry or wet can be used for tying jigs and flies. Depends on the look, affect, or action that you are trying to achieve with your tie.
Dry is usually the expensive higher grade used mostly for dry flies for the floating characteristics. No webbing and genetically bred for tying. Comes from the cape of roosters and now from specialty saddles (best bet to use for any style – really like the Hoffmans).
A lot of imported hackle comes strung or on dyed skins – try to buy American – a way better quality of feather.
Wet hackle is from hen (not limited to chickens) capes and saddles, real webby, and is generally used for tailing, matuka style (profiling), and for collared necks.

That depends on what you are tying – too generic of a question.

Hackle is used numerous ways – again it depends on what you are trying to achieve with your tie. Slow sinking – high profile – pulsating – flash……..

You can get hackle from almost anywhere – costume supplies, mostly fly tying suppliers, or even the lurecraft catalogs.

I have saddle hackle, dry fly hackle and still on jigs I mostly use strung neck hackle which is what most use. I would buy saddle hackle for tails on jigs, but if you want to do some fancy stuff maybe get a little of that too, but the neck hackle is best for jig tails.

About the only time I use saddle hackle is on flies or if I want a palmered hackle on a jig body. Really don't like it for tails though.
