Scoremaster,
I believe the primary differences in shellcracker and crappie jigs are the size and color.
Crappie jigs are generally more colorful because of their bites are often reactionary and defensive - not always to feed, particularly during the spawn. Bright colors like chart, flo pink, and flo green work well because they are attention grabbers and elicit a feeding, but also aggressive response. Crappies also feed/bite things that are above them because of the position of their eyes. That's why you always hear of people misjudging the depth of crappie and fishing "under" them. They just can't see the bait. Therefore, feathers and other materials that provide good action are very important with crappies. Crackers on the other hand are bottom feeders. They go after small crustaceans, worms, and other things living on the bottom. They are generall smaller than crappie, but bigger than bluegills. Therefore, the ideal jig for crackers would be smaller than for a crappie, prolly something in the 1/32, 1/48, or 1/64 size range. Also the colors used for cracker jigs should more closely resemble their primary food source such as black, green, and dark oranges as opposed to trying to get reactionary bites with bright colors. Last, brim will bit just about anything you put in front of them that they can get their mouth around. I have caught them on dark and colorful jigs, buy they tend to favor smaller, darker jigs with legs and/or wings. They also respond extremely well to scents.
I am still new to tying though, so keep that in mind when taking my advice on this on the part about how to tie the jigs. The part about general fishing is reliable though :D.

Darker colors/patterns and jigs are fished low and slow.
Ditto what the other guys said.
Crappies are primarily minnow feeders.
Gills and crackers are mostly bug eaters.
Jigs should match what the fish eats.
I guess the thing that puzzles me about this premise is that the biggest and most bull bream I ever caught were found because of using fire tailed worms when bass fishing. They were eating the tails off so we went back to the marina and got some crickets to catch them. This was a very long time ago so I was not using jigs for them at all.
Anyway the smallest was 3/4 pound and the biggest was 1 3/4 pound and we ended up with 42 pretty fast. So why did they attack the fire tail?
Also last year I got some of that real shiny new material for fly tying that you have to use a heat gun on after it's tied and the bream hit that pretty well too? I think most guys know about that guy now that sells that stuff.
It is not that I don't agree with what was said above, just want someone to explain this to me as this puzzles me.

This stuff is kind of a pain as it needs some water based glue or a glue gun along with normal tying. I have caught crappie on it and sold some, but have not really had anyone really excited about what they did with them or at least they didn't tell me. I still have a good bit of the material and can still make them so if someone wants them I can still deliver. The guy lives in Alaska and has a lot of videos on U-Tube. He calls it Nuclee-r fly tying material. Lots of colors and the pic I am showing is just the first one I ran into on my photobucket. See pic below.

You don't have to buy his stuff. He currently has 181 videos that are pretty informative, especially to someone just starting out.
