My crochet basics
Well I figure I need to explain some about how I get the body to look the way I do. The crochet is easy enough once you get it down but the wide body is harder.
The main idea is to use whatever you can to make an almost flat body before you start the crochet/weave. Tie in some 20-50# fishing line on the sides, lead core leader line, anything that will stay stiff and give the hook shank some body. One smaller jigs and flies I use lead core leader line tying it in, wrapping the shank with it and then using pliers to smash it to a oval cylindrical shape. This give the body of the jig the right look when I crochet them. I have used all of the above to do it on any size jigs and flies. On larger ones I use lead free solder to give them bulk. I have even used decoy weight cord for it.
That is the key to what I do. It is the only way I have found to do it and get a body that looks like it has a true top and a rounded bottom. The crochet/weave leaves one color on top and the other color wraps around the rest to give it a true body shape.
Give me a day or two and I will hopefully be able to get a series of pictures showing the steps, that is if anyone is interested.
I love taking my kids fishing, now if I could just manage to fish at the same time.
