I bought this set to get me started

Hi guys,

I bought this set today at Academy Sports and outdoors. Its a Deluxe Fly Tying Set made by a company called skykomish. included in the set are a deluxe fly tying vise, a bobbin, a bobbin threader, a bodkin, a set of hackle pliers and some scissors. Also included is a DVD called "beginning fly tying. I'm concerned though that its for tying flies as opposed to jigs. Does it matter? It also has some material like marabou olive, peacock herl, thread, etc....thanks guys.

I started off with a much similar kit myself! tying is tying to me... the thread goes around the hook whether it's a trout fly or a crappie jig... i started out tying trout flies but living in Dallas/Fort Worth I'm somewhat limited on pristine trout waters!! but the same techniques you learn from tying flies will amply apply to tying jigs.... and don't be afraid to take some of those fly patterns and modify them for a crappie jig!! happy tying!!

The main thing is getting started. Once you start and you catch a fish on your jig your hooked.

The techniques for tying both are the same. Jigs are just a simple, heavily-weighted fly.

Your DVD might show how to tie a woolly bugger. Tie that pattern on a jig, and you've got a killer crappie fly.

Also, Bass Pro sells an excellent video devoted exclusively to jig tying.

For me it helped more (after learning the basics!) to just look at jigs and see how they were put together. When you have some time, feel free to browse through those that I have tied and posted up on my blog...

The only thing is you want to make sure of the kind of whip finish tool is in there and it needs to be a Matarelli-style.

I don't like kits much my self as there is too much in them that are not what you want.

Even in fly tying I'm not one to recommend Kits but it will get you started. As DBD said even though it's for fly tying you can do every pattern on a jig hook, and several of the techniques in fly tying will help you in Jig tying alot.

Take your time, using a straight bass hook and cheap tying thread so you don't waste your good stuff, practice starting your thread, half hitch's, whip finish with the materelli whip tool and by hand. It only helps your tying.
