Default ok lay it on me need advice

i would like to thank skip for his post of essentials and been studing it for some time .
but i was wondering just a couple of things would i need head cement and what does it do?
and i was going to buy a cheaper set of tools from cabelas just to get started cause maybe it's just not for me and i don't want to drop to much money in it and not stay if so i will upgrade items at that time .
does everyone buy there lead heads or make thier own ?
ands should i use waxed thread all the time.

most of the time i will be trying to tie crappie jigs and maybe maybe some trout jigs and of courdse some trailer hooks for some bass.
i'm gonna have to pick up a book on working the tools and the knots and such my computer isn't fast enough to get the downloads that some have provided .
and one other question is should i get a kit with the hair and feathers hooks and most all the assecorries or can i just get a plain tool kit and then look around and get the mat. that i would need .

    thanks,
    Scott

Scott, If you're close to a Bass Pro Shop, or can order online, you might check out their jig tying kit. It comes with the basic tools, enough tying material to tie some jigs, and an instructional video to do the basics.

The head cement helps hold the knots you tie to secure the chenille. Not everyone uses it, but it will increase the jig life by a huge margin. I use the cheap water-based cement, some use superglue, some make their own. Skip and Ship can give you their ideas.

I think the kit from BPS is around $30 and it's a good starting place. If you decide to get into it, you will develop different styles and ideas that are unique to your jigs. Be warned: It's highly addictive and a lot of fun. Plus the thrill of the first fish you catch on one of your handtied is a pretty stout high!

    Good luck!!

I went to bass pros spent $120 and bought everything from 100 jig heads 1/8, paint few colors, vise, everything. Have restocked and got some different colors but still have some of original stock pile:D

    Scott,

Welcome to the hobby of tying flies. It is fun and enjoyable. Look in the archives and check out the thread on what tools you will need, but also some basic videos that Skip and I have put there just to give indivciduals a basic idea of how to get started with a few basic flies.

    Here are the threads.

I found a cheap fly tying kit at Walmart one day, cost about 10 bucks in discontinued rack. I bought it and thought hmmm, this could be fun. More than decade later I have spent far more money than I care to discuss publicly. My advice, get out of this hobby now while you still a bank account with money in it.
