Tying Thread

Where do all of you purchase your tying thread and who has the better price?

I use Barlows. You can also use Jann's Netcraft. My personal choice is Danville 210 flat waxed nylon.


Remember common thread sizes range from 1/0 (the largest) to 12/0 (the smallest). A 3/0 thread has a larger diameter than a 6/0. Select the finest diameter thread you can handle without breaking.

210 is strong enough to put a little pressure on when tying. I personally use uni thread 6/0 because it is the strongest that I have use at that diameter. It is a little expensive for thread though.

Use Wal-Mart polyester blend sewing thread. Works as good as expensive tying thread, and you don't have to pay freight on it. Been using it for years.

there is no substitute for danville flat waxed 3/0 or 6/0. Wapsi makes a really good 140 mono cord in the waxed and unwaxed versions its called UTC. Lots of colors to choose from just will have to call wapsi and find distributors in your area. The stuff from walmart has its uses. When tying a 1/8th or 1/4 oz. jig i use the thinnest stuff i can find and then i patch over it with my flat wax nylon once i get the build up i want. Tying a 1/8 or 1/4 jig with 3/0 uses too much yardage per jig. I think i used 100 yards of 3/0 tying 2 dozen jigs. But for tying 1/16 i would use 3/0 or the 6/0 all the way.

Having been in the business and knowing how to tie jigs for as long as i have known i can tell ya you will want more black and red thread from them than anything. Sure the other colors are nice but the black and the red are the useall colors. You can tie any jig with black or red and make it look good.

If you want a really good quality glue to use while tieing. This is a two type glue process that will make your jigs indestructible. Use Rhino Ultra glue from walmart. Start your thread and cut your hair add a pin head of the Rhino glue to the place where you started your thread and throw the hair down on it and start winding. Once you get that wound up if youre tieing another color in add another pin head of glue. I say pin head cause this stuff is a self spreading glue so once its applied and the air gets to it it will work itself through the whole body. Finish your wind and do your whip finish. Then you can use either wapsi's original jig head cement or component systems clear gloss lure and jig finish. I can gaurantee you this if you do it right and you get the hang of the self spreading glue you will make some truly indestructible jigs.

That is a nice tip about Rhino Glue. I will add it to my "Arsenol." Thanks for sharing. You are right about the RED or BLACK thread. Both are great visability colars in the water. I use more of the red because it mimicks the red of fish gills and is the color of blood. Fish ARE ATTRACTED when they see red in the water.
