    Default Hook Questions

Have begun to tie some of my own jigs. Most of my jigs will be marabou tail with the chenille body. I have the ability to pour my own heads. What brand, style, and size hook do you guys recommend? Mine will be mostly 1/32oz. size with some 1/16oz. Was thinking a number 4 in the 1/32, and a number 2 in the 1/16. Also considering using either a Eagle Claw or a Mustad GOLD to prevent rusting. Notice a lot of jigs on here tied on a sickle hook. I don't know anything about these. Can someone comment on these hooks? Thanks

1/32nd with either a #6 or #4 works quite well.

    1/16th with a #4 works well.

Skip uses Sickle hooks a lot. He can comment on those. I buy my jigheads from Grousefly or just order them on line. I am glad you got the tying chenille part down pat now. Be sure and send me a sample of your jigs for all this great advice.

I have a frien that has modified his jig mold to accept a #2 hook. I beliec that is correct. Both on the 1/32 and 1/16. They work great. I do like the gold hook on the Jiffy jig. It will catch a fish and 4# line will pull it out of cover.

I have most jig heads with both Sickle and regular bend and almost every size has #8, #6, #4, some #2 & #1. I have on hand 1/64, 1/32, 1/24, 1/16, 3/32, 1/8 & 1/4. Only the 3/32 have only one hook size option.

I buy from Grousefly as well.

I like #4 sickle hooks in 1/32nd oz. jigs and #2 sickle hooks in 1/16th oz. jigs. Do a search about sickle hooks and you'll find lots of info.
You don't need to use the gold hooks, they just cost more and unless you want them they won't help prevent rusting. I've never had bronze hooks rust, just don't let moisture get in the box and that includes putting wet jigs back in the box.

I'm a new tier myself and have only used sickle hooks. These are the sharpest hooks I've ever run across in all my years of fishing. I haven't fished much with my new jigs but I can say this, I don't think that any fish that has hit my jigs has gotten away. Them things sure do stick the fish.
