Default BASIC DIRECTIONS FOR THE RED RINGED CHICKEN FLY FOR CRAPPIE

Red Ringed Chicken Fly by shipahoy 41

    Supplies Needed
    a) 1/16th Minnow head jig
    b) Dental floss
    c) Waxed 6/0 red tying thread
    d) Loctite glue
    e) Toothpick
    f) Tail: Pink Marabou and Black Marabou
    g) Tail: Flashabou or silver & black mylar
    h) Body: Green and Black Chenille
    i) Gill: Red Yarn - use lighter to slightly burn the ends

    STARTING OFF

Insert jig into rotary vise. Wrap dental floss as a first layer on hook shank and secure with four wraps. add a drop of super glue on the dental floss and rub it in with the toothpick. I learned this from Richard Gene The Fishing Machine. Cut off the tag end. This bonds the dental floss to the hook shank and the materials to the dental floss and the tying thread you choose. You will lose the jig in a brush pile before the materials ever come off the jig.

    ADD IN TAIL MATERIAL

Wrap front and back with the 6/0 flat waxed nylon tying thread. Stop at the back 1/3 of the shank. Add a drop Loctite with a toothpick to the back 1/3 of the shank. Tie in Pink Marabou tail feather with waxed thread so that only 1/8” extends past the hook. Turn rotary vise 90 degrees and tie in Black Marabou tail feather with waxed thread on the tail.

Rotate vise so jig is on its side. Tie in Flashabou or Mylar. Rotate vise to other side of the jig. Tie in Flashabou or Mylar. Rotate jig so that the hook shank is on the top.

    ADD A BODY

Start tying in Black and Green Chenille. Wrap seven times with a tight wrap to start. Use toothpick to add one drop of Loctite. Spread glue on the top shank of the hook. Tight wrap chenille along hook shank to form the body stopping about 1/8 inch from the jig head. Wrap chenille back and forth until body is formed. Tie off using “X” wraps with tying thread about four times. Cut off tag end of the chenille.

    ADD GILLS and optional feelers

Cut off about six inches of red yard for the neck gill and ring. Use lighter to lightly sear each end to keep in from unraveling. Tie in the neck ring where the chenille ended and wrap up to the jig head, Repeat two or three times. Whip finish seven times. Use Dental floss and tie in the “Feelers.” Whip finish. You have completed this fly.
