I'd start with something simple like a wooly bugger jig before trying salmon flies. They look cool but whoever tied the one in the picture is very experienced, plus patterns like that take time and patience, something I don't personally have. For me, if it takes more than five minutes to make I don't bother with it.
Hey Jim good to hear from you...really liked you post back a while on propeller spins. You make some great jigs. I have collected so much stuff I want to experiment to make something that is different. This is really addictive. Someone should have told me that I could have saved money by buying jigs at $10 a piece instead of spending $1000s tying my own.
When tying dry fly patterns flip the hook over in the vise or it won't look right in the water.
Thanks Fatman I see what you mean. I know you have everything in the world and have been making jigs for a long time. I bet you have tried everything. Would like to see some off the wall creations.

The fly fishing community has gravitated to tying and fishing many fly patterns on jig hooks for a number of years now. They use smaller jigs on 8-16 size jig hooks, first used in Euro competition fly fishing and its now pretty much mainstream in the fly fishing community. Look for "Euro" or "competition" patterns. Streamer fishing with weighted fly/jig patterns is becoming very popular with fly fishing gear.
There are some interesting YouTube videos showing how to cast jigs using fly rods. Why not just use a spinning rod?

Been fishing this way with jigged streamers for a few years now. Enjoy it immensely especially when fishing among the purists! [emoji23]
