I have yet to play with wire but the videos I've seen online they usually add the wire first and secure before doing anything else. These were flies and not jigs though but I would think the same would apply. Might try an alternative to hackle like marabou or craft fur where you're not trying to align the feather on the jig. On my light jigs I'm just going to save them for plastics and only tie heavier ones I can cast or jig. I do have some really light ones I use on double rigs with the bottom the heavy jig.
