Newbie looking for advice

Don't forget about Renzetti vises too! I tie on a Nor-vise, but Alan have a Renzetti Salt Water Traveler, but it cost more than a Peak which I am a dealer, but the Renzetti is very good quality and gives more room around the jaw for fingers and just more room. It's a light weight alloy vise and probably what I would use if f and didn't have the Nor-Vise! I love my Nor though and the ability to spin it saves time and makes some things easier, but it's about $300! I don't sell Nor or Renzetti so have nothing to gain, but these two are my personal favorites!

i suggest you go to a good Fly shop, maybe even Bass Pro and feel and see the difference in some. I don't think they probably sell the Nor and really don't know what brands they sell, but at least acan see and feel the difference in a quality vise and a cheaper one! If their is a Fly shop anywhere close to you, go!

I too use a Renzetti Traveler that I've had for about 6 or 7 years and was used before me. I haven't hurt it in all the jigs I have tied other than a clean and lube. The peak, Renzetti and Atlas vises all do a fine job for a moderate price and no need for a later upgrade. A rotating vise is very easy to tie with and shortened my learning curve a bunch. I also understand living within a budget but just wanted to give my input. I was in your shoes once and with everyones advice and patience I've learned to make a pretty decent jig. I will say that all vises are NOT created equal and it is in your best interest to handle before you buy. Good luck on your choices, there's a lot to learn. Welcome to the addiction.

I've been looking at the Renzettis and others but they are out of my price range at this time. I'm gonna have to stick to one under $50 for now and hopefully down the road I will be in a better position to get a better quality one but thank you for your advice.

Go on Trapperman.com to the trapper shed. This is to buy and sell. There is a fly tying out fit for sale. It is on the 3 rd page if I remember correctly. Cabelas tools and extra materials. I think he is asking $120.00 for everything. You can probably do better on it. Vise is important but a top of the line vise is not with in your price range. Scissors are the # 1 tool you need the best of. You can hold a hook with a pair of vise grips and make a great fly. However with out a good pair of scissors it will look like crap. The vise should service you well until you want to make the jump and go for a commercial vise!
