Wow, well first off let me tell you all feathers are hackles. You can have Grizzly Neck Hackle, I have some. So there is a lot more I could say because you have different feathers on the same bird. The neck hackle is the most webby and soft of the longer feathers. The shorter stuff is called soft hackle and if it's a hen it's hen soft hackle. The longest and most narrow and stiffest is the dry fly hackle. Inbetween these is the saddle hackle which is more used as a collar or something like that!

hope that helps some, but there is a lot of learn when talking feather and tying!

sorry forgot the marabou. It depends on how one uses it. I tear the longest stuff off to tie wih and no stem in the tail most of e time. I will use a few very thin stems from some, but mostly pull off what I want and save the tips for other things. All that is left from mine is the butt ends of the stem and maybe in fly tying there are uses for that, but I don't know. I am speaking of that becaus I know some use the quill part on some flies.

You should get Sadle hackle for tying subsurface stuff or something cheap. They are usually graded #1-3. #1 being more expensive and higher quality.
Save your money those expensive necks are for dry flys. If your buying necks to tie jigs your wasting your money. Neck is off neck. Sadle is more like center of the back on a chicken. Metz brand and whitting are both good brands. Look at the price of a full #1 neck from Metz or whitting.
You will see why I stopped tying flies.

Grizzly is a color of neck. Same as dun, sulfur, blue qill, it's all fly tying stuff we are using there stuff and adapting it to tie jigs.

Yes as Smoltz said the high end stuff if mostly for dry flies. You can get some of that cheap saddle as strung, but it's just a dollar thing and unless your going to do collars tHe neck is the way to go. You will also see that the Hareline Neck Hackle colors are limited a little so of you want a different color that tHey have Crazy Angler or even the same place you get the salt water neck hackle. It's about half the cost of Salt Water hackle because it is generally shorter.

Perhaps I can help. Hackle comes from the neck of a bird, usually a chicken. Also there is saddle hackle thus comes from there saddles There is hen hackle (it is soft) and cock hackle ( it is stiff and usually shinny) Soft hackle is used for wet flys do to its movement acting like insect legs. Male ( cock hackle) is used for dry flys. Grizzly hackle comes from the neck of a plymothrock chicken. Usually the dry fly hackle is used on dry flys like the Adams. Marabou comes from the marabou stork. Also some uses turkey flats as marabou. Birds have many other feathers such as wing, flank and so on.
