Thanks skip. One big problem I have is there are no stores or fly shops around here for me to physically use one before I purchase.

Same here, closest to me was probably 120 miles or so away. So understand that issue and I just took a stab, but I ended up using my first one of just one year and then the Renzetti for a year and the Nor now for about 8 years or maybe 9. I still like all the other ones I mentioned though and the Salt Water Traveler I have I wouldn't mind tying on again as it is a great vise too! However that one will probably cost you $225 or so.
There's a Dyna king vise and some supplies for sale on the personal classified section. Might do a little better but I hear they are a good vise. just FYI
Used my new one today and it works great for me anyway[IMG]
Here is one I tied
Looks good CL. I believe that will do fine.
keep your first one... all the rest will look so much better
Also, keep the first one that you catch a fish on. It will mean the world to you. Please do not tempt fate or pressure from your mind to keep fishing with it after the first one. Probably 4 out of 10 folks will loose their jig tempting fate like that.
Welcome to the hobby,

The Dyna-King Kingfisher is an excellent vise, but they sure have gone up in price since I bought mine years ago!! I've always tied on non-rotary vices but that's my choice. I thought about the Peak and my wife was going to get me one for Xmas last year but I tie just fine on what I have, and rather use the money for other stuff.
Yes - it's tough to buy a vise without putting hands on it. While you may not have a tackle/fly shop in your area look for fly tying groups and attend one of their meetings.
another option that's coming up near you is the Fly Fishing Show 6-7 Feb 2015 in Winston-Salem, NC.
Winston-Salem, NC | The Fly Fishing Show
I looked at the Vendor list and I was surprised that my local shop will have a booth there!!!! With the list of folks tying you will see lots of vices, pick up tying tips and they always have materials for sale.
After you buy your beginning supplies, I suggest you take a fly tying course somewhere.
