problem with bobbin

new to this site and to jig tying. I bought a kit from cabelas to try tying the bobbin that came with it worked for a few days now it keeps breaking the thread. do i need a differnt higher end bobbin?

Welcome to the group. Yes, look at the ends of the bobbin. If you don't see ceramic ends you're going to continue with your breakage. You can get a decent bobbin for 10-12 bucks. No need to spend more IMHO.

It depends. If the thread you are using is of very small diameter and strength (say 70 denier) it will break rather easily. It can also be that there is a problem with your bobbin that is cutting the thread. I rarely go below 140 denier and like 210 the most. This is especially the case when I am tying hair jigs because I like to apply a lot of pressure to the thread. Hope this helps!

Still a good bobbin will help a lot, but needs to have at least ceramic inserts. Some without ceramic will be fine, but it's a hit and miss kind of thing. With ceramic you don't need to worry about that. However even the cheap kind with ceramic inserts have some issues too, like the insert falling out of the tube and then it's up to you to glue that back in which is not easy yo glue them back end without getting any glue on the outside side of the insert. I like Dr. Slicks about as well as anyones in that price range. Some bobbins have full ceramic tubes which is even better usually.

First off Welcome to the site.

As far as the bobbin goes, I would agree with what the folks before me have said. I try and only get ceramic anymore, it is just not worth the hassle of the other bobbins. I understand that you are new to the hobby and it seems never ending on all of the things you need. A good bobbin is like having a pair of shoes that fit just perfect. You don't notice how nice they are until you use something that does not fit as well.

I bought a doctor slick for around 10 bucks and does well.

I have ceramics too but mine were real tight when first used so I "carefully" pulled the "legs" aprt a bit to make the bobbin spin easier and let me hold it to let more out as needed.

Yes that is the way to adjust tension. Also can squeeze them together and make one tighter too.
