Not bad at all for first! I usually take the feathers off the stem on marabou to tie it in. There are a few fly patterns that use marabou tips, but most have no stem and you can get away with a very fine stem in a tail, but without the stem you have better action. Also always cut the end your tying in and not the end that will be the end of the tail.

I used the whole feather for two of those that why they look double cut.Was mostly just for practice.

Try pulling off the barbules of the feather and tie the tail from that. Also you shouldn't need 2 whole feathers unless they are really small. Less sometimes is better for action. You want marabou to look like a swimming fish in the water and that tail just working all the time.

If you're tying chenille body jigs, you don't need to buy a bunch of thread. This is what you want:



Coats Transparent monofilament thread. Costs about $3 for 400 yards. Cheap and matches any color. Available at just about any craft store that sells sewing supplies. Comes in polyester and nylon (most stores I've found only carry the polyester but either should work.) It's all I use except when I'm tying thread necks or jigs for toothy fish.
