Default If you were starting from scratch

I have been reading and looking at jig tying for a while and think I am ready to jump in . If you were starting with nothing what would you suggest. I don't want the best but middle of the road and better. I assume like all tools you get what you pay for. Any and all suggestions welcome.
I have read most of the stickys above and some were older and didn't know if a lot had changed in equiptment.
    Thanks Rod

Well a lot of what you ask is depending on who is talking. Vises go from very cheap to as ,uch as $600-$700, but I tie on a $300 vise, but consider it more than middle of the road. I consider the vise I sell as middle of the road, but also a vise that will last a life time. The Peak is a very well made tool and hard to beat for the cost.

There are a lot of vises in this range that are very good, Renzetti and Griffin are just a couple, but we can talk more later and I can give you some good links.

Other tools make for a wide choice and I have tried many, but think Dr. Slick's stuff really nice and not cheap, but also not extream high either. We can talk a lot more through email or PM if you want.

A good rotary vise, allow $150 or so. If you stay with this, you won't need to upgrade. If you don't and sell it you'll get most, if not all of the $ back. A Matarelli whip finisher. Ceramic insert bobbins, about 4. BPS has some good ones I use for under $10. These tools will go the distance. Getting across the table from someone who ties and learning as you go speeds the process greatly. No dumb questions, we all sat where you are at one point. Merry CHRISTmas and welcome from Middle Tennessee.

I have a Sportsman's warehouse close so I can compare prices. Most that I've bought has come from ebay. I won 6 bobbins for $3.00 plus $3.50 shipping. Can't hardly find 1 at that price. I use empty ammo brass as stackers. All wood products I make for myself. Clear nail polish is as good as fly glue to me.
This vise is about as cheap as I would go. For me, it's 37. plus 7% at sportsman's.

for glue buy a can of high gloss lacquer and some decesnt thinner ( I use MEK for lots of reason) mix the lacquer and thinner 50/50 and it will last for years and only mix a small bottle at a time!

    Good ceramic bobbins
I've been tying Jigs since the late 70's and flies for about 5 years - and have never used a rotary although I've looked at them. Good sharp scissors, hair stacker is nice but not necessary. As has been said a Materelli whip finisher but also learn it by hand. If you have a taxidermist close by get to be good friends with him and get all the fur scraps you can!!! good thread 210 denier and being registered here!!!!!!! we can give you all the help you need with tying.
