I've extensively used a tubing manufactured by the Pepperell Braiding Company of Massachusetts and just wanted to tell y'all how really great it is.
It comes in different colors but the most utilitarian is simply black. The black is softer and more supple. It's used for kid crafts and is called Pony Bead Lacing.
It comes in 15 foot coils for $1.27 or so at some craft stores, but from the factory you can get a hundred foot coil for $3.50
I use it as a tying base on jigs and have used it for years. I spindle the tubing back and forth as I work it up past the barb and curve of the hook......then dab some super glue on the hook and spindle the tube piece up to the lead head.......spindling between thumb and finger. It's ready to work with in about three minutes.
Just as you start the thread you will notice how nicely it grabs the thread. Now that the tying area is larger to start with, I save time and effort winding.
Lately, just as an experiment, I tied a few jigs with silicone skirts. I then added an extra piece of tubing and left a space between it and the first piece. I then slid on a grub as a trailer tail and threaded it on until the nose went a little past this new tubing and rested on the bare hook shank. Looking it over the next day, I decided the color of the grub just wasn't a good match to the skirt, went to pull off the grub and was amazed how much resistance the tubing provided, tougher to get off than a grub on a lead collar and barb. I put a new color grub on and am now using a second piece of tubing on all my jigs just for the trailers.
If you call the company after googling Pepperell Braiding Company and going to their website, you can place an order with Mary on Extension 19.
The tubing comes in a slew of colors plus one milky white that glows in the dark.

I'm not sure what or how you are using it as a under-body/base and how it would help with tying jigs. I have use some stretch lace for tying bodies on flies and it also comes in tubing if wanted. I am very interested in how you are tying the jigs so please post some pics if you can. I know a few would love to see your process.
