??? roadrunner mold

anyone have a roadrunner or similar mold 1/16 to 1/8 oz. ive decided to check into this. these things cost about 1$ each and i dont like the hooks that come on them. i want a bigger black wire hook that will bend and pull loose from a stump. im not planning to make thousands or even hundreds but save a little $ for myself and freinds and i might enjoy it. also what are the cons for using tire weight lead or even battery lead?

Maybe pony/horse heads molds,but you can buy Roadrunner head molds I don't think. The molds Do-It makes are pony.

thx, do you mean fumes from battery acid? have you tried this?

Okay Do-It has a Pony Head mold and a Horsehead mold - Leave roadrunner out of it. The Pony mold has a barbed collar and the horsehead mold has none.

Do-It Molds: Horse Head & Pony Head Jig This has a picture from the Do-It cat showing the horsehead on the left - pony on the right. I hate the fact that Do-it puts the titles together you kind of have to go by the has a collar doesn't have a collar. You'd end up with an assorted size mold to get those 2 sizes.

The combined 1/32nd and 1/16th mold is a MAJOR PITA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you can only pour one size at a time as there is just no room in the groove - using sickles is tougher yet - you'll need to sit down and dry fit sickle hooks in the mold so that when you go to pour you KNOW they'll fit. The crane swivel can be a pain too, on the assorted size mold you'll need 2 sizes 10 and 12.

Battery lead stay the hell away from it it's nothing but trouble and it's not worth the trouble!!!!!! The ONLY part of a battery for lead I would take is the posts as they are pure lead or used to be. Tire weight lead is okay but with my mold I've found a 2-1 mix is the best (2 part tire weight/ 1 part pure) and if you get tire weights make darn sure you sort them and any with ZA, ZN or Z you don't want they're zince and will screw up your lead.

We have the horsehead mold because it has the 1/48 oz head yes it is a pain to make but a great lure for bream to walleye do not know anyone that produces one to sell maybe wrong. The 3/16 oz we have found to be quite good with a willow leaf blade hard to find also.The tire weights work well for us because it makes the lead a little harder and holds the hook better once molded.We have went to the eagle claw gold hooks will hold fish well and will bend so you can get your lure back without breaking also has a better barb than the sickle hooks.Thats what has been working for us hope this helps.If you need the barb we just add the little wire keeper you can get from barlows.com works great to hold the plastic without tearing your tube or grub.We have a picture on our web site you can see the keeper fits the mold without drilling or any work to the mold.

I used Tire weights for years. I melt down the tire weights in cast iron pot on the outside. I stay away from the pot until the lead has melted and then dip all the excess and throw away. Then pour into cornbread type skillet so they will fit into lee mold. I try to pour up about 150 lbs at a time......enough to get me through the season. Always be very careful when dealing with hot lead!!

do any of you sell these? ok i just looked at the links. have any of you ever made a mold from bondo? i heard a story recently about this.

No selling allowed - If you don't use a lot of them sign up for the material swap box I put a bunch of homemade ones in it, some with sickles some without and the split rings and blades.

You can do a search for info on using bondo for a mold but there's a bunch of info on Tackle Underground - I won't say it can't be done but with having to use a crane swivel it could be a PITA!!!
