Try going straight to the overcoat. This will help in a lighter coat of paint reducing coneheads and sparing your paint. On all of my 2nd coats or two tones I try to use as little heat as possible for the above reasons. Sometimes a little additional heat is necessary, but I generally do quite a few to ensure consistency. It's hard to do a handful at a time until you've got a good pattern.
