Dubbing

I have been having a hard time finding smaller sizes of chenille in an assortment of colors. I tye jigs from 1/100 oz down to 1/64 oz and the largest hook I use is a #8 sickle. I don't like the way medium chenille looks (to bulky) on my small jigs so I was wondering if dubbing would be a better answer? Have any of you had any luck with dubbing? Pictures and thoughts would be great. Thanks!

I have just started tying Jigs but have been tying flys now for a while and use dubbing a lot. You can definitley tie a smaller body with that method and to be honest you will get better movement out of the dubbing in the water than with the thinner tighter chenllies you would need to use.

With dubbing you can tie what ever color and size you wish and should be good for small jigs as well. I do have a lot of dubbing and just wish I had more time to use it. I have been moving in the direction for several years and about 1 1/2 years ago I bought a DVD from a guy that does some fantastic things with dubbing and his method it called Rope Dub. I have tried to spend more time on learning his way and just love it and the options available using that. I am hoping he puts out another DVD soon and I will be in line to buy it as well.

You can look a fly patterns where they have the pics and words explaining all the things you need to know to start trying this. I say go for it, but learn the materials first so you will get what you want. There are a lot of different kinds available!

Is the rope dubbing where you make a loop in the thread put your material in it then use a hook looking tool to spin the line over and over and over again and then let got and it twists really quickly trapping the material... then you can tie it on the jig? I saw a video on youtube of something like that. Skip are there any types of dubbing that would be better than others? I noticed that dubbing comes in many different materials. Any suggestions?

VCM, Rope dubbing is totally different than anything like that. That is why I bought the DVD, because that kind your talking about you can learn in lots of places. There are even pros with many year experience that have bought his DVD to Lear how to do what he's doing. Below I will leave a link to his site so you can see a little about it and what he says about it. Also some pics. I will PM you a link to a bunch of pics he tied for me and some are flies and some jigs. He was helping me learn and give me some ideas too. I can go back and get the pattern and material list for any of them.

On materials or type of dubbing. I would get sone Antron as well as some other flash type dubbing, but you can also mix in some pieces of left over flash you maybe cut off a jig and just mix it up. Look a maybe buying a few of the dubbing boxes they have out and what you like go back and buy packs to refill the boxes? I do also like Ice dub, but not the easiest stuff to use. There is also some synthetic seal dub that is nice. You may even want some quick decent dub so it will fall faster or maybe not. I don't know where to lead you on material type as it has a lot to do with if you want bright or natural colors.Maybe some of Dave Whitlocks SLF Dub or Polar dub. There are just so many and I may not be the best person to ask since I have over 25 boxes or dispensers of dubbing and packs to back them all up, LOL!


It's less now than when I bought it, LOL! He and I have become friends and should tell you that.

I am wanting some minnow like colors and some brighter colors or dubbing. I will probably buy a vast assortment of colors. I've got another question for you I want a very small tail material that will get wet and look like a very small spike... lol Any thoughts...

Sure, use to Pheasant tail feather barbules, turkey and some others or if you want a stiff one use goose Biots. Can use most any feathers like these for a tail. I use some with Pheasant and plan on doing a lot more of that in different lengths. Here is a pic of one I like and have not tried yet. I made this one a tad long.

Nice tie. Make me one just like that except put a short 1/2" yellow or green goose biot. I would hate to put it in the water. I am really going to have fun with this just like I have with tying fly's. So many options.

It is without limits. I like the Pheasant tails so I bought one in about every color I could get. I have hardly used any of them yet, but plan on doing so before spring hits. Will try some shorter and longer t ails with and without flash too. This one was done using that UV glue with some lateral scale over the thread, then the UV Glue, then palmer the hackle and then hit with the little high dollar UV light to set the glue, cut hackle stem off and whip finish. It's is supped to be so called bullet proof since the hackle stem in inside the glue. Very cool way to do this and not need a wire to hold down or protect the hackle.

I like the Biots too and have a good many colors of them too, but need to add a few more.
