    Default Experimenting with nail polish

I've been experimenting with nail polish recently, after finding the mother lode at the dollar store. There are a whole bunch of nail polishes that are basically glitter suspended in a clear base. You can get some really stunning effects by powder painting a base color, then curing and dipping in the nail polish. You have the chip resistance of powder paint, with a nice glitter coat. It dries fast, and so far I haven't needed a top coat.

Sound interesting. Do you make a comment about jig making when you buy all this nail polish...or let them wonder? lol

By the way, I liked your Oct jig. Did you tie the chartreuse in at the tail and let it hang while you did the black body? Then pull it over top and tie in at head? Lots of color combos and effects with that one. A good way to use chenille scraps too short for a body.

I have tried the nail polish thing and it's fin until it's over Fl Yellow and that stuff makes it a different color. I just bought some glitter that is heat resistant and mix with clear powder paint. The when I paint it in what ever color then I can dip it into the clear with glitter and then cure in the oven. Comes out very nice. I have silver, gold and Chart glitter.

The only problem I've found with nail polish is if you try using plastics on the jigs - you'll get a melted mess.

There is a clear coat with glitter powder paint but you'd have to cure again.

The metal flake in clear pp is the way to go. But you can do it with veeery fine normal glitter and still get a proper cure. So then you would think the glitter would work in all powder, BUT it doesn't show well w/o theclear carrier.

I bought my glitter from CSI and I mix the amount of glitter I want and put it on at the same time I paint them, then cure just one time.
I only bought 3 colors since from them you have to buy a pound of any color you want. I got Holo Silver and Gold plus Chart.

skip I believe the glitter that we you some plastic can be used with powder paint most of the glitter that we use in plastic is heat resistant.

I tied the bottom color in at the head, but first I stripped about 1/3" of it down to the central thread on the ends. I used a looped piece of chenille, but you could just as easily use two pieces. I tied in the ends of the chartreuse, ran the thread back to the head, then tied and wrapped the black. One I was ready to finish, I clipped a set of hackle pliers to the black chenille to weight it down, then folded the chartreuse forward and tied off. I figured that way it wouldn't come loose as easily.
