The tails look a little too long in my opinion. Search youtube for crappie jigs tying 101 or just tying crappie jigs. Typically you want your tail length the same lenght as the 1st digit on your pointer finger. Another tip is to get some wire cutters and cut the barbs off the collars if your tying on collared jigheads. Keep it up, everyone started somewhere and every tyer improves with each tye under their belt.

Tails are a little long for me, but where you are fishing it could be what the fish like. I would experiment some, tye some with shorter tails and use the ones you have with the longer tails and see what the fish like. I would also take a pair of finger nail clippers and trim the barb off or wire cutters will work. You can reduce the amount of thread that you use. I usually tye the thread on the jig first and take a little bit of my loons hard head cement and put on the thread and then tye on my materials and finish with alittle more cement. I use the plastic bottle with the long thin spout on it and only alittle drop comes out and I coat the knot with it. I have had good luck doing that way with no jigs coming upart. Some times when tying in your materials just think of it this way less is more. Good luck with your tying and I think your jigs will catch fish. I would also watch youtube as C.H. has mentioned.

They do look a bit long, especially that first one. But hey! It might be just what they want on any given day. Youre on your way now. Better get a place to start stockpiling all those jigs you gonna be tying.:p

I used collared jigs for a long time, and you just have to do things different. Ball collar jigs, with a tiny ball looking end to the collar, make the hair I tie on them flair out a bit. Tapered collars do just the opposite and pull the fibers together. Pull up pictures of others jiga and try to copy them in length and proportion. Your techniques are doing good, just refine them a little and you'll do fine. You can nail polish the heads for different colors, and try to keep the tail the same size as the jighead itself. Let me finish by saying that there's no real rules, and the fish are the judges. Keep at it, and get em wet. Tight lines.

when using caller jig head for tying make sure that you take a pair of pliers and smashed the back part down or cut it completely off. I'm talking about the lead behind the head then you can take your thread in make a tapered body and get the whole thing either and vinyl paint or powder paint your tails are definitely too long. They should be no more than a 1/2" to three quarters of an inch long .
