Where to get lead?

Looking for tips on where to look for free or cheap lead. Any particular types of business that for what ever reason has stuff that could be melted down?

possibly tire shops... I have heard of people melting down and using wheel weights....

I've used tire weights, before ... to make pinch-on sinkers & jigheads. Not "soft" lead, by any stretch, but functional.

Check your local salvage yards and IF they'll sell it to you get it. You can also check plumbers, sometimes they have stash's of old pure lead water pipe. And I don't care what anyone says if you can get tire weights use them, some molds will take the harder lead even down to the smaller sizes, those that do mark on the handles and you'll know what type of lead works best in each one.

On the tire weights just take out the Z (Zinc) or ZA (Zinc Alloy) and get rid of them, the Zinc will contaminate your lead.

ABOVE ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Read the sticky on Lead Safety!!!!!!!!! It's not worth getting hurt, I took a lead spurt back in HS and got a piece in the eye. Jungle Jim just had a bad scare, you can see the photo's here on the site.
