    Default Extra Long Jig Hook?

Can someone point me in the direction of a 90-deg gold aberdeen jig hook that has a longer than standard shank? Extra Long not Extra Light. Thanks.

Nightprowler: This takes me back a few years to the time when we had a limited supply of jig hooks. Back in the 1970's we had about 4 styles of jig hooks and two makers Mustad and Eagle Claw. Each had about 4 different styles in size from 2/0 to 8 and if you didn't use them you went without. We we had a mold that worked great and found out that a 3X long hook was needed to tye it correctly. But what to do. We went and bought a straight 4x long hook and hand bent them. The were about 2and 1/2X and close enough for goverment work. If I remember right they were 9674 Mustad.

When we hand bent them we took the temper out of the hook about a quarter of the way back from the eye and then used a round nose plier to make the 90 degree bend. This requiered two quick bends one to 90 degrees and one to straighten the eye parallel to the hook. It took about a hour to do a hundred and can remember doing a thousand one day. You would break about one or two hooks a hundred because of not having enought temper out of the hook. The great thing about those hooks is that they were forged flat and were a great hook for big fish. Now that was when these two companies made some good IRON. These hook were sharp and could take alot of abuse.

With all the hooks that are made today I sure someone makes a good 3X or 4X 90 degree jig hook that will fit your needs. I felt that a short decription of how we did things in the old days was needed to be recorded for some historical value. Things haven't been always as ease as calling up your favorite material supplier for a favorite brand of hooks. Heck I can remember a peiod of a year that hooks were almost imposible to get. My how the times change guess Bob Dylan was right after all.

the eagle claw model 574 is an excellent extra long shank jighook, and in size 6 it is my favorite for tying my calf hair oval headed pinky type jigs. this hook in size 6 is very very sharp, sharper than any other eagle claw jighook ive tried. they are however bronze, I have never found them in gold. buy them at barlows tackle or captain hooks. these hooks never seem to miss a fish.

If the 574 isnt long enough for ya, you could try the O'shaughnessy

I use size 8 oshaunessy sometimes and they work good in my molds, but the size 6 has much thicker wire and is almost unusable in my molds. even the size 8 is a very strong hook though.

Mustad 32751 is a fine wire bronze, extra long shank, aberdeen jig hook that I've used for years. I would imagine that the 32752 would be the same hook in gold but I'm not sure on that.
I stumbled upon these hooks years ago when I was loking for a short shank, heavy wire aberdeen jig hook. The Mustad catalog showed that the 32751 was indeed a short shanked, heavy wire hoopk but when I got the order, the hooks were ex long shank, thin wire aberdeen jig hooks ! I figured it was a one time mistake but it's been a mistake that to this day, and is still misprinted in Mustads catalog.
I'll try to get some pictures up later so you can see the difference between a 32751 and a 32755 standard aberdeen jig hook.
I love them and have been using them since the early 90's ! They bend easy and get you right back to the fish with little effort !

Saddle Tramp I have always like that 32751 Mustad have used it off and on in alot of molds. Mustad makes a fine hook but can't see why they don't make a sickle. Maybe copyright or something. They are my second favorite hook company. Matzuo sickles are now my favorite and go to hook for me.
