Schlappen is not going to replace marabou as it's totally different. Pretty sure I know what your looking for and that ain't it! It's nothing more than longer and wider hackle feathers.

Just a warning about this and I know some guys are doing this method to keep from tearing off the feathers for the stem, but think about if some fish, snag or what ever, maybe even a gar cuts that stem; you jig is done even if it the first cast. Not sure why you don't think that you get pretty much the same thing tying marabou the regular way. I mean once it's wet all of it will be the same.

As far as selection of materials I don't think anyone has as many items as Bob Marriott's...
Bob Marriott's Fly Fishing Store - Product Catalog - Turkey & Marabou

Just look through the feathers and see if what they have will work. YOu can call them to ask most anything for help and they have good service. I know it's retail, but they carry so many items you can't get with out having some kind of account with every supplier out there.

Or maybe the Extra Select marabou that Hareline has will do, I just have never used that method for my marabou and doubt I ever will. I have bought a bit of the Extra Select Marabou and it's really long and nice, but packs are small since I usually buy my marabou by the OZ at least and some by the pound. Bob's also carries pretty much all of Hareline's stuff plus lots of others.

when i made the jig in the pic i put two wraps each turn an to finish i i wrapped back over the stems...tying them kind of like some saltwater streamers. these jig dont last long fishing speckled trout ...they are toothy critters. i only fish these when the bite is slow. they will usually devour this jig... thanks Skip for the info.

Your welcome and I can't imagine that the regular marabou way wouldn't last as long as these, but I never tried them. I just posted some jigs I tied on the saltwater board. You had ask that I show what I tied for the saltwater guy and a few were marabou using Roadrunners. Most were hair.

That Extra Select is really long.

Palmering it does make a difference with flair. When I palmer mine for steelhead jigs I will tie it in with every wrap. Wrap the marabou, wrap the stem with thread in a couple places and repeat until I have the look I want. It really looks huge in the water if that is what you are after or it can look like a little fuzz ball floaitng around and moving in a light current.

Let me know if you find a good source for thin stemmed marabou that gives you a good number of wraps from each feather. I have yet to find one that guives more than 3-4 wraps before the stem is too think. Some it you can cut the stem in half but it is not easy to do and I ruin more feathers that way than I get to work.
I love taking my kids fishing, now if I could just manage to fish at the same time.

fish_4_all have you tried the Extra Select? While the stems are not so tiny, the feathers are probably about 6" long. I don't tie my marabou like that and have never had the need either and don't fish for steelheads here, heck the only steelheads around here are just hard headed country boys, LOL!

The next problem with the Extra Select for you is that they don't come in bulk packs or I have not seen them and just come in a small pack, but they are very long for marabou!
