Automatic Bobbin

Has anyone ever used an auto bobbin? i was just wondering if they were worth all the fuss of spooling all of your thread on the spools and the time it takes to get the spool on the bobbin right.

Depends on what your doing with them. For me I love them for somethings, but see no real reason for them on just tying jigs? How advanced is your tying and how much advances things do you do? Do you use a Nor Vise or no. All these things should tell you if you want one or not.

I dont use a Nor vice but i was thinking about all the time i spend winding the spool of thread back up while i try to keep tension on it, but im not sure if its worth the fuss of getting all of my thread on those small little spools.

I would also like to know more about it. I tie jigs up to 3 oz's so its takes a lot of thread and plus always having issues of thread jumping off the spool as I'm using heavy thread. Now I wrap the thread around one side of about 2 times to hold tension to keep it from doing that.
Also seen something that allows a person to refill spools is this it? Know anything about this? As I have started to buy my thread in the big 4 oz spools and pound spools. Right now I put in on bobbins off a sewing machine. Works but would rather run it on normal spools.

Auto bobbins that I like and have are the ones from Nor-vise and I like them, but you have to wrap the thread on the spools and then have several wraps around the side of it to give enough tension. Not only that. but changing spools is not so much fun, not crazy hard, but a paint still. I bought 4 so that I can keep 4 colors on and ready, but I also have probably close to 40 others ready. I have probably 18 spools for my auto bobbins. I do love how they retract, but they also re-set every 15"-16" of thread out so if you were to pull too much out it will not all go back.

Like I said it's a blessing when dubbing as your bobbin is over the post on a Nor Vise there is not bobbin cradle, it's a separate post that you can warp one time around to hold you bobbin when not using it. Anyway while it's hanging over the post you can spin the vise to dub or get your dub on the thread and then lift it off the post and hold it out until you can spin the vise to warp the dubbed thread in place.

It is also a help wrapping your thread base on and that is nice for someone like me with bad shoulders.

If you think it will help I say give one a shot and see. I think they are about $35 each if my memory serves me right.

I have the Nor-Vise with auto bobbin, and enjoy using it very much. Here is a link to Norm Norlander's auto bobbin video. In addition to this video, there are several others that depict some of the advantages of using an auto bobbin. As always, there are pros and cons, so weighing them for yourself is all important before making a purchase. The nicest feature that I like which was already mentioned is the fact that the bobbin takes up the thread slack without loosing thread tension on your project. It's also works nice in reverse when you want to unwind thread from the fly body.

I have one of them too. Bought one Ekich bobbins and it has a lot of very nice features, but it drives me crazy and the spring in it doesn't re-set auto and you have to use your thumb and fingers to push the spool away from the little teeth that hold it from turning so it will turn and release the tension. I mean it's very well made and all, but like I said it makes me crazy and peeved.

Hope I made that clear, but that part I don't like and it's what I do like about the Nor-Vise one.
