the answer is usually no...unless the stem is very thin..I do leave it in when i use the very tips for some applications or when using hackle for some SaltWater patterns....my first jigs looked the same way..hang in there.

You don't want the little short type and he's right you want strung Blood Quill. I do save all my tips for tiny stuff and flies. The stem for me to leave it is has to be so thin that it will not hamper the action so only a couple of ever 100 or so get left in. I take the feathers off the quill and stack then until I get enough like I want and then I cut the butt end to size it and never cut the tips off or try to make them even. I want it to look natural.

Oh should have said like in my Sig as I forgot what I had there.

Looks like it should work to me, but next time by it strung and make it Blood Quills which it looks like that is what you have. Just pull off the feathers starting at the big end and a little at a time and stack it. Then cut if need be form the end you pulled off to fit the length you want. Make sure there is no wind from fans or any kind. Keep some of the little sheets the wife puts in the cloths dryer after she uses them and if they get static in them just pull the feather through that little sheet and all will be better.
