    Default Non-Ceramic Bobbin thread issue

    Guys

I have a few bobbins that I bought before learning of the ceramic lined ones. A few of them seem to break the thread nearly everytime I use them. Does anyone know if there is a way to correct this problem or do I just have to throw them away???? I thought I would use them for lead wire but have found that does not work that well either as it gets twisted and breaks as well....

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I would toss them. You will be much happier with the ceramics. You could also pass it on to a school youth group who is learning to tie jigs. They never have enough.

Well you could spool your chenille and use them for that if the tube is big enough.

A guy posted a tip on a fly tying board about this and what he did was glue a plastic bead on to of the bobbin tube and kept tying.

Save them in case you decide later to use some lead or copper wire and they will be good for that and no problems. If you had something to make the tube very smooth I would think you can make them work, but probably not worth the time IMHO!

I would keep them as well unless you notice a visible burr of metal that is cutting your thread. I actually do not own any ceramic tip bobbins, i am kind of a cheapskate.

Makes me wonder if it has more to do with how much pressure you are tying with. I have some thin diamater threads that break very easily if too much pressure is used, just have to be careful and get to know its strength. The finished ties will hold up regardless if done right, but an extra drop of glue at your finish knot will seal the deal.

I have a couple of ceramic bobbins with only one bead, and by looking you can see it isn't very polished or smooth. The Terra bobbins I have cost me $8 each and almost never break a thread unless I use uni 6/0 or get heavy handed. Hate the uni stuff I have, much better luck with the Danville threads. Ship, if you know of a program that would use these two I'm replacing I'll send em to ya and you can do as you see fit. They aren't the best but I guess they'd be OK for starters.

I saved mine and use them for mono cord and floss.
