Find what works for you. I'm not a pro like some of these guys in here, but everyone has their own way. I have a few videos and almost all those guys, including Lefty Kreh, use the whole feather rather than pulling from the stem. You can get the same "bushy" look using the smaller diameter of the stem tip by just pushing forward a lump when wrapping it in. Plus it's faster for me. I usually throw a couple dozen together the night b/f I go b/c I lose more jigs in tops than any man on earth.
Put it in the water and see how much diff. you notice. Otherwise you're just catering to human eyes, which def. helps in sales.

As far as wrapping the bou, do a loose wrap while you're holding its position, then do another, before actually cinching down and then just wrap tight from there. Always helps me to use my left hand as a full time guide for the tail material when I'm wrapping. Also, if that doesn't help, add a dab of super glue or sally's. I know nothing about waxed thread, half the time I'm using some borrow sewing thread from a family member.

Don't know a lot, but maybe that'll help.

I do not know if this is an effect you want but if you want a really fat Marabou jig try to palmer wrap the Marabou. To do this take a full plumb of Marabou and tie the butt of the bou to the back of the hook and wrap the feather around the hook all the way to the head. It will make a fat jig. This is done by of he steelhead and Salmon fisherman.

Here is an example of what I am talking about. The base of a Marabou feather has a thick butt, I cut about half of it off and wind it onto the hook from the back of the hook to the head. Some guys then put glue on the thread to make the palmer wrap stronger. Take ahold of the tip of the feather and wrap toward the head and when you get there put on a whip finish. One trick is to wet the tip of your fingers with your tongue and pull back the bou while you finish. When done take your bodkin and pick out more plumage. It is usually fished below a float or bobber and allowed to drift or reel it in slow let it sit and make a small twitch and reel in some more. The picture is a 1/32 jig. Good luck.

    Good idea JT
OR if u want a chenille body..........don't have the chenille?, tie in the tail like JT said and then twist the bou nice n tight. Then just wrap it like chenill. Just make sure you use the bou with thin butt stems or soak the butt to make it pliable. I found it to last as long as chenille, give the "wooly" look, but most important....it's just that much more movement. Stems aren't always your enemy..at least not the thick ones :D!

not perfect, but im learning it:

Learned that from a jojopro tutorial and it's the most useful thing I've learned yet. So thx if you post here, JJP!
