what is the reason for using flat waxed thread instead of regular sewing thread?

That the general idea. Now its a personal preference thing as far as I am concerned. I have used regular fly tying thread for years. I do like a single strand nylon floss for tying the small bream ( bluegill ) bugs. IMHO you can get a little tighter wrap with the flat waxed thread. But in MHO I feel that the regular thread holds up better. I know that there are tyers out there that will say that I am wrong but they may not tie like I do. Just use what you like and are most comforable with. Experiment with different threads till you find something you really like and then stay with it. Thread is cheap and you can have five different kinds and see what works well for you with out breaking the bank.

Spot on Redman. Don't use sewing thread as it has cotton and will rot. Fly tying thread is a bit tougher than mama's thread.

i use alittle of each..usually a jig doesnt last long with me, i always seem to lose it before it has a chance to rot
PBUG2009, When you use regular thread, is there anything special you use to coat thread after it is tyied?
I use flat waxed nylon because it is more durable and gives you neater wraps while lying flat. For me it boils down to confidence. Whatever I do I am confident it will produce more fish than if I did not do it.

if you're going to use regular thread like sewing thread you can pull it through wax to keep it from rolling on you.if you do use regular sewing thread. I suggest that you use nylon and not cotton . But like pbug was saying. I usually do not have a jig long enough for them to rot also but we do use flat wax thread for most of my tying.

I have one jig in my box to remind me to tie more of them. It's a brown pattern and I have over 80 fish on it and it still looks good. I'd be peeved if it rotted to nothing before I got to it.
