Can someone tell me what type of duck feathers are used in Float and fly jigs? Are they mallard flank feathers or teal or commbinations or are they something else? I know some are tyed with craft fur also.

    Thanks

i tie them with all you mentioned plus wood duck flank and also marabou. all work at times.

The original were I believe mallard flank feathers, but most guys use any kind they have and Zac is right gadwall flank is nice. Their craft fur is really nice and for about $35 bucks you can get one package of every color they have at their website, plus the color chart can help you with the color combo's that you can tie yourself.

If it's a feather ti will work in the right conditions and for the right fish. I have used every type of feather you can think of but one of my favorites are the tiny little feathers form the neck of a mallard. Hell to tie a bigger fly with but they work awesome for trout. Peacock is also a very good choice, I have caught a lot of fish on a Peacock herl body with a peacock sword tail. One of the best clear water sunny day flies I have ever used at times.
I love taking my kids fishing, now if I could just manage to fish at the same time.

I've always thought the terms "float and fly" were just meaning jig fishing with a float, as far as sacalait are concerned. Wrong?
As many people I know that duck hunt, you'd think I'd know something about theme there feathers, but alas.......
    Ah well...plenty of time.
