new vise

Well it has been a 2 weeks since i started tying and i can already say i need a beater vise i was wondering if any of you had any suggestions thanks crappie-killers

I use the Griffin Oddessy Spider. It's a reasonably priced rotating vise and I like it.

I posted this a while back in a thread called "New vise advice". Like Ship said, a rotary is the cats meow.


I use a Renzetti traveler and like it a lot. The peak rotary is a nice piece of gear also. Apex Atlas is also a good one. What I will tell you is to not buy anything until you've had your hands on several. I know you want it yesterday but you will be glad you waited. I'm not slamming the griffin in any way, but different vises are so different from each other that you owe it to yourself to take the time to educate yourself and get one that is you. I handled no less than 6 or 7 before I bought the one I have. I was surprised how smoothly some operate compared to others. Good luck in your search, keep us posted.


Don't be afraid to spend a few bucks cuz you only buy once and you can always get your money back. Mine was used and a big savings and working with good equipment is a real joy, no frustrations. Skip sells the peak which is a nice one. Do your homework and you wont regret it.

I fly fished and tied flies before I got into crappie. I sold all my fly gear including my tying equipment including a Peak vise. When I started tying jigs the first purchase I made was another Peak vise....nuff said??

FWIW, the second thing I bought was another pair of Anvil scissors. Good equipment isn't cheap but it may well be the best value!!

I bought a Danvise when I started tying and I really like it! Cabelas sells a universal base for relatively cheap for it as well, if you don't want it clamped to something.
