You can find alcohol burners on ebay that are reasonable. I am about to get a new one. I find it the easiest to use and all you do is figure out the count for each size head.

Example with my counting time...for a 1/32 oz. head probably 2-3 count on each side and dip. 1/16 about a 4 count on each side. 1/8 I go to a 3 count on each side and then one more time on the side I started, but tilted more to the top side or hook eye side. So about a 9 count total. 1/4 will take a 12 count or so. But remember how fast you count will make a difference. As one side heats it will get more shiny when hot. If you over do a 1/32 the lead may just melt off so be careful, but you also need enough heat to put a good amount on and not have it too thin.

I also keep wood tooth picks handy and after I dip the head I stick the tooth pick in until I get it open. If it closes again after the cure then when I am tying I heat a bodkin needle and stick it through and it will melt the paint right out and I scrape it with my thumb nail to smooth it after. Now it may be silly, but I keep one tooth pick for each color in a tiny cup and keep using that one until it breaks or something like that. So I have this little cup with enough tooth picks for every color I have, LOL!

All this is just me and others use other things like heat guns and I have 2, but don't like using them for me. Also the alcohol burner will not put off suit to get on your lead.

I just use my $10 toaster oven to preheat for 6 minutes at 325 degrees then dip, clean the eyes and put back in to cure at the same temp for 15 minutes.

I use a propane stove tank with a plumbers nozzle. 6 count for a 1/16 oz jig.

Skip, I've hand-dipped over 100,000 jigs and I have a pretty good system
for me, but I learned something from your post up above. And I really want
to thank you for the heated needle trick for removing sealed eyes. I don't
get many on jigs, but spoons are another story. Honestly, I'm gonna go to
bed feeling kinda stupid about something so obvious. WOW I've spent to
much time cleaning those suckers out, and you made life easier for me
    THANK YOU!!!

Watch garage sales for the little toaster ovens. You can use kitchen stoves, but for the sake of keeping a marriage, it's not a good idea. Plus, I was never big on cooking food in an oven that had been heating lead.

If you're just tying for your own use, don't let the baking worry you. Baking makes the paint much harder and durable, but just plain ole painted heads fish just fine.

I use my curing toaster oven for preheating to paint as well, you can preheat 40 jigs if you want to... reduces the time of heating the jigs one at a time!

A good oven thermometer is a must when using a toaster oven, you can get them at Wal-Mart for $4 and a toaster oven for $20 brand new.

For me, heating the jigs one at a time just makes the job more tedious than it needs to be.
