First hand tyed jigs

Just bought some stuff today to give it a shot. I was really surprised that it was much easier than I expected. Was a fun way to spend a rainy day.

They look good.What is that tail material?A little long.

Maribu and a couple of them have something flash. Not sure what it is called. I left them about 3". We fish alot of 3" plastics up here on Truman in the summer. Sometimes even tip with a minnow. That is whats cool about these jigs. You can always cut a little of the tail off if the bite is slow and think a smaller bait will help. I am going to tie a few with some smaller sickle hooks and make them about two inchs long. Already on the hunt for differant types of tail material. Would like to find something that will stay poffed out when wet. That way it will have a bigger profile.

Get you some hackle as I did on these jigs. It throws a big profile and mixed with the maribou you still get the movement you want. I have had a great year fishing and never used a plastic.

Those look great. White/Chartruse has been good the last month or so for me. I am going to tye a bunch today. Fishing the MO Crappie.com couples/co-ed tournament Sunday on Truman. I think I will use some of these jigs and see how they do. I had a good time yesterday tying these up. I will get some hackle and try it in some.

The one thing I see almost on everyone that starts tying is they don't take the feathers off the stem on marabou. You should pull off what you want to tie on and cut the length before you tie it in as you don't want to cut the ends off to square it off. So take the feathers off the stem, stack them and pinch them where you can cut to length before tying in as you will not have access to that end after tied in.

So don't cut the good end off and leave the stems out and you action will be better. I usually don't mix much marabou with other things as it can only take away for the natural movement of the marabou. I know lots of guys do and that is fine, but I catch lots of crappie and don't need anything other than just marabou in the tails in Spring. Summer I mostly use strung neck hackle tails.

Great to see another tier. Looks like you are on your way and good luck fishing them. It is nice to be able to tie a jig and see if it will work for you. Once you catch your first fish with your own jig you will be hooked!!!:DThanks for posting your pics and welcome to tying .

Do your self a favor. Spend a lot of time looking and studding the fly tying info on this site and especially the beginner and intermediate lessons. Also check out the tips section.

lOOKS LIKE YOU CUT THE ENDS EVEN JUST PULL WHAT YOU WANT TO USE AND TIE IT IN AND SHORTEN THE TAILS A BIT NICE JIGS THOUGH.
