    Default Finally Got Some Saddle

Got some saddle hackle in the mail today and been playing with it already. It does work better than neck hackle.

Good I knew you would like that better since that is more in line with how it should be used. Neck hackle makes great tail feathers and saddle is best used in collars or palmered hackle applications. It's a bit stiffer so stand up better too.

You also may want to try different amounts as most fly tyers say it takes less than some would think and works better, but I have no real personal info if that is true or not. Some like it heavy and some less is what they look for so maybe experiment some?

    Good job,

Good looking wraps with just getting it. Very nice. I will see if I can find what is considered the fly tyers bible on hackle. All I remember off the top of me head that a size 8 streamer hook only needs 5-6 wraps from bend to eye. It doesn't take much for sure, the idea is to give it a profile and give the fish something to feel in it's mouth so it holds on longer.

I can't wait to get that long whooly bugger saddle from Skip. It will be so much easier than my saddle hackle to tie small jigs and flies.

Have fun with it and remember to save those tips and butt sections. Too many uses for them to throw them away.
I love taking my kids fishing, now if I could just manage to fish at the same time.

When you get to the jig head, how much you wrap depends on what you want for looks and how you want it to effect the jig. A little bit will only give a profile to the jig, a lot of hackle at the jig head could slow the fall and possibly make it wobble and move erratically on the fall.

There you go Scott!!!!!!!! Yeah it works way better. As Skip said some like a heavy collar some a sparse collar it's up to you. Plus one feather ties several jigs, which makes it a cost effective material.

Thanks everyone. What can I do with the marabou section of the hackle feather that you don't use? It's looks too good the throw away, but not long enough to make a tail.
