The biggest thing that helped me is to pay attention to proportions. How much of a material you put on, the length, sometimes the angle or location on the hook shank itself, and learning how to handle the materials to make them look up to their potential.
Another thing is using the best materials you can afford. Quality materials are going to end up looking and handling way better than "second rate" stuff.
