Well I tied 3 of them, one with the big rubber and 2 with the small rubber. The smaller ones are definitely much fuller and easier to work with but the big material takes less time to do. I don't know which of them I prefer but I think I will use them all. I did learn that it is easier to tie them backward as with the eye of the jig in the vise but that might just be me and the way I tie.
My first ties
Fly for comparison
I think I might have gotten more in mine that there is in the fly. Need to add some feather fibers and other stuff to it make it buggier.
I haven't trimmed them yet. They do need it for sure.
I though it would be harder but I got more in there than I thought and it wasn't too bad. Maybe some peacock herl, tinsel and other stuff mixed in would fill them out more. Some dubbing or peacock behind the jig head will fill in better than trying to tie them tight up to the head.
Open to suggestions, I know they aren't my best work but they will improve as I tie more. Will post trimmed pictures soon.
I love taking my kids fishing, now if I could just manage to fish at the same time.

AZ, not bad at all. Maybe 7-10 minutes each and I broke the thread on each of them. Once I get better at them it will be much faster.
For those that can use picture help, I know I need it, the top is as taken and the bottom is a simple click of enhance in my software.
Trimmed down enough to give them a profile. I won't trim these anymore but I will trim later ones down to a lot closer as it doesn't seem it will effect their over all appearance.
With the little Birch pine cones that the fish eat here all the time these should be killer.

I like the cut you put on the bottom bug. Looks to be ready. Nice work

Hey if you want a fast easy way to get some buggy look, get some buggy nymph Yarn and after you tie it on just use a dubbing pick to make it buggier. I made my pick out of a match stick like from a Kitchen match and wrapped some hook part of some Velcro. Actually tied it on and then a little glue to secure it. Makes a very good dubbing pick/brush.

They look great!!!!! That little bit of material right at the head is supposed to simulate the bug coming out of the tube.

Cool looking bugs!!
I will give the wolly yarn a try for buggy stuff too. I have done some dubbing but I suck at it. I do have some lion brand yarn that is really buggy looking, I tied some with it that my uncle caught steelhead on. Almost jig weight with 4 hematite beads and the yarn at the top.
Only thing that would make these rubber bugs easier would be a way to keep the tied in rubber back to put in the next row. But that is about the same as tying elk or deer hair on.
