When I started tying jigs a few years back, I purchased the very basic items. I have a $12 vise, 1 bobbin, 1 whip finisher, and 1 pr of scissors. Total cost for all items was under $25. I signed up for jig swap #4 and have been in every one since. Question is, I'm thinking of upgrading my vise and looking for opinions on what is a good rotary vise that won't set me back a king’s ransom? Thanks for any suggestions.
PS. There is a jig swap getting ready to start 6/9/2oo8. If you’re interested, better sign up today.

For the money the Peak is the best IMHO and not just because I sell them and you can buy them from anyone. Just compare it on this site that is fly fishing Ohio I think and for under $150 the Peak is best.

If you don't want to spend over $100 I would not get a rotary. I had a Danvise and it's pretty good, but lot of it is plastic. If you don't want to spend more than need be to get a good Rotary then just get a Thompson.

I use a Thompson ultra and love it. I also have a $600 Renzetti sitting on the shelf that I don't use because it because I don't like it. If I tied flys for a living I might have to get used to a rotary vise.
Don't get me wrong I am not like ausable above, I love every Rotary I have, but even though I sell Peak I use my Nor as I am faster using it by a good bit. also the Nor you can do things that you just can't do on other vises. I like my Renzetti and Peak pretty much equal and the Peak cost a good bit less, but I do also like my Renzetti which was like $210+ and the Peak is $143.95 and built like a tank to last.
If I already knew I liked tying and was going to keep tying I would by the Peak as it will last a very long time with no need later to upgrade unless you just want to keep upgrading.
The article Skip posted is excellent but they don't list alot of other vise's out there. Another article that's done every year is from Fly Fisherman
The Best Vises | Experts evaluate the pros and cons of modern fly-tying vises in different price ranges
I started out on Herters #9, then I got a Thompson Model A, and my current vise is a Dyna-King Kingfisher (Non-rotary). PERSONALLY!! Just me!!! I dont' mind not having the Non-rotary. I learned on a stand still model and am still tying on one but that's me. I was lucky when I got it, had a gift certificate plus a sale at the fly shop and I got it for $65.
Try to get to a fly tying class or fly shop and try a bunch of vise's, if that's not possible check for local fly tying clubs and see if you can try tying on some of theirs.

I could just get used to a rotary. Maybe didn't try hard enough.
I have went from a 7.50 up to a Peak 140.00 and some change and love it but that Nor looks very interesting just don't know if it's worth saving up for. Is it really worth it for a 500 or more a year hacker.
I just ordered a Griffin Oddessy Spider vise from lasedoc. It was shipped yesterday so I haven't gotten it yet, but reviews I've read are good. Under $80.

I've been in the same quandry about a new vice. I managed to come upon this review of vices and read them top to bottom.

On Wednesday I'm on my way to get an Anvil Atlas (149.95) Seems as though the Anvil Atlas is the best bang for my buck... Life time warranty. Made in Columbus, In at Anvil USA. Called and spoke to Dave Vogel who is the designer of the vice. He told me should I ever need a part or repair just to call him.

What more can I say..... Read the reviews all brands and price points...
Hope this helps....
