hey guys
I am young and don't have alot of time or money to spare but thought i would enjoy making some custom jigs/flys. someone give me some direction on a simplified way of getting started. I have a nice set up in my garage that I would like to turn into a little work area. any suggestions.

Most of these guys in here will give you top notch advice. I'm a beginner (tying less than a year) and still have a starter kit with tools, but my tying materials have grown substantially. I find myself looking at odd things in the stores and asking "Will that work on a jig or fly?" My advice would be to buy a fly tying starter kit and see if it's something you want to do. Start out small and if you like it, you're inventory will begin to grow. I'm still working with the basic fly tying tools and see no reason to change (yet), but if I do, I'm not out very much. I think I paid less than $50 for my kit and it was well worth it. It's a great hobby and when you start catching fish on your own stuff, well that there is worth a lot more money than you have spent.

I'm still in my first year also, and it's extremely addictive. But in a good way. A good rotary vise will be an asset in the overall, but might be an obstacle if the cash flow is low. I love mine and there's no need to upgrade. Should you get out of it you will be able to sell it and not lose much money. DON"T buy any bobbins that don't have a ceramic bead in each end. I have both and the cheaper ones are a pain with the smaller thread you will use as you progress. Ask lots of questions and listen to these experienced hands out here, they have helped me immensely. There are some great jig tying videos on the archives as well as here on this forum. Look at the sticky notes at the top of it. Take the dive and plunge right in. You will never be the same and you will love the hobby, especially on the first fish you catch on one of your jigs.

Start with reading the links Ship gave that are the sticky post at the top of this page. Then decide how you want to go. You will also probably have a better idea what you want to do.

I never have owned a rotary vise and have been tying for years. Start out small. You can get a decent vise for $15 that will serve the main purpose of holding the hook. Get some marabou, hackle feathers, white thread, black thread, and some chenille. No need to spend a bunch of money right at first. That comes about 2 weeks into the obsession!
