Pbug: Good Lord with all the Enviro nazis running around I would go out and buy at least 100 more pounds of lead. I have a feeling that more sooner than later that we will not be able to buy lead like we do now. Next week I plan on buying a nother 50 pounds. Remember that you only get 48 -1/4 oz. jigs to the pound. so this will leave you short for your 1/8 oz. jigs and none for the 1/16 oz.With out the lead you are only making flys. Lead and Hooks FIRST Skeins of cheille second. Been down this road before Just some friendly advice from a old geezer.

It's early this morning Redman, but I think the #'s are a little off.
    1/4 oz. = 4 jigs per ounce
    16 oz. to the pound, so 4 X 16 = 64

Don't forget to flux your lead pbug!... especially if you're going to use those sinkers. You don't want to stop up the spout on that nice new pot.

Any type parafin/wax will do, but beeswax is the best.

I agree with Redman, you can never have too much lead.

boatstall Yes was on the lap top and couldn't correct my error. That being said. Here are some more numbers.

How many jigs we get from a pound of lead.

    1/2 oz.= 32
    3/8 oz.= 42
    1/4 oz.= 64
    1/8 oz.= 128
    1/16oz.= 256
    1/24oz.= 384
    1/32oz.= 512
    1/50oz.= 800
    1/100oz.= 1600

My Comment to Pbug was to lay in a supply of lead. The wacko's are going to be comming after us in the sporting community to end our use of lead. They DO NOT want us to fish, hunt, or run one of those evil outboard motors that run on Hydrocarbon that ruins the envirovment. They haven't got a clue that the sportsman balances the enviroment and keeps populations in order. That is why I am telling you all to stock up before it is to late. Remember they are in power and are ruling by fait law. No you can look at me as a crack pot but ask your selves when was the last time I killed a duck with lead shot.

Is it okay to flux you lead in the pouring pot or should you do that in a melting pot....

Either way is ok, but if you have some real trashy lead, I'd do it in a melting pot first... and it won't hurt a thing to flux your pouring pot too.

My pouring pot gets a little rust on the inside from the heating and cooling process, so I flux every time I fire it up (I usually add more lead too).

I flux at startup (after I add the new lead) and every time I ad more lead.

btw, pbug... read your manual on that pot! I don't consider pouring lead an inside activity, I pour all mine outside.

I also drilled 2 holes in the base of mine to anchor to my working surface with screws, those pots are top heavy when full... and the last thing you want is 10 lbs. of 600* lead spilling onto your crotch!!!

Pbug; Glad to hear that you have a hood. Lead poisining makes your teeth fall out kills your liver and can make you go crazy. Hard to cast jigs when you are in a hospital just trying to keep alive. Stay safe !!!

I hate to see how much you have in a few years, LOL! I started out and got a little at a time and then it was like every month I had to tie a bunch of jigs to pay for all the materials I got that month until I have this darn whole room full.

    Good luck,
