Thanks all! Ya know, never thought of hellgramites living only in creeks & rivers..... there goes my match the hatch theory for catching the crappie in my local lakes! Haha. Oh well, I do think the flies look buggy enough to get bit from something, I'm not too picky about what it will be.

Hellgies are like a bowl of chashews sitting there after a meal, u just can't leave them alone.

    Those are excellent-looking ties AF.

I've fished rubber hellgies before with some success. You should fish those for steelhead too. I've seen the contents of actual Indiana steelhead stomachs that were chock-full of them.

I like em, they should get something to hit them. If the fish to be reluctant to really hit them try shortening the hackle so it is about 1/4 inch long. Can make a huge difference when the water is clear and the fish know what to look for. Might try adding some deep red to the raffia too, I use a Sharpie on my stoneflies with raffia for river fishing for Cut throat and they love them when it is really hot out.
I love taking my kids fishing, now if I could just manage to fish at the same time.

Russ, those are the finest example of a hellgramite I've ever seen!!!!
Smallie will climb all over them! And Crappies, Perch and trout.
I've had some of my best days on lakes with "mites" so don't worry
where they live(streams) the fish love them. And yes they do pinch!!!!!!
I used to sell them in my tackle shop when I could get them and the guys just loved em!!! I hated to handle them though and have many pinches
to my credit. The secret is they go dormant in very cool water, that's the time to pack them, if you value your hands
Where did you buy the raffia??

Craft store up the street from my work. 89 cents for 24 yards, should last me a looooooonggggg time. The kind I got is kinda shiny, made by Darice Company..... called Satin Radiant Raffia Straw. If you can't find any, let me know, have enough to share.
