    Default Dyed some squirrel tails

Dyed some tails using Rit dye. Came out ok. would have liked to have a little darker though. I know black is hard to dye. I was wondering if anyone had used hair dye from a beauty shop to dye with. Does a good job on human hair, so I think it would work on aminal hair also. Might have a order when dyed, but should go away within a short time.

I talked to a guy that has been tying flies for longer than I have been alive yesterday and we got on the topic of dying materials. From what he told me black is usually dyed after a purple base dye is on, I don't know from personal experience just relaying what I was told, might be worth the effort to give a try if all else fails.

i like dying and trying to get the right color black is very hard to get right i have tryed many ways to get there but its neaver true black its allways lighter then i want even doin the purple then black its not true black
acid dyes work well but can be be a pain to work with <i hate them>
and to anser my own the 2 black tails in my pic above was done with cheap dollor store hair dye i started by washing tail in hot water and dish soap and drying with <wife loves this> wifes hairdryer and dying it 2x longer then it says i think was 15 min i left for 35 washed out like it said let dry for a few days and start tying out of it i have yet to have any of it fade in water or time so works well

I havn't tried hair dyes but when I tried black perfection dye on white kiptail it came out a dark gray, not black. I may have to dye it again.I f that doesn't work then I may try hair dye.My other colors turn out fine.Dog, those tree rats look great.
